2026 Commonwealth Games Weightlifting Qualification System Announced
The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has unveiled the qualification system for weightlifting at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, scheduled to take place in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2. A total of 176 athletes, comprising 88 men and 88 women, will have the opportunity to compete in this prestigious event.
Four Pathways to Qualification
To ensure a comprehensive and inclusive selection process, the IWF has established four distinct pathways for athletes to qualify:
- Host Nation Allocation: As the host country, Scotland is granted automatic qualification for one athlete in each of the 16 bodyweight categories (eight for men and eight for women), totaling 16 athletes.
- Direct Qualification: Winners of each medal event at the 2025 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, set to be held in India in August 2025, will secure direct entry into the Games, adding another 16 athletes to the roster.
- Ranking-Based Qualification: A majority of the slots, totaling 128 athletes, will be filled based on a ranking system. This ranking will be determined by performances in designated competitions occurring between June 1, 2025, and May 18, 2026. Notably, the IWF World Championships in Forde, Norway, scheduled for October 2025, will serve as a key qualifying event.
- Bipartite Invitations: The final 16 spots are reserved for bipartite invitations, aimed at nations that have not qualified athletes through the previous three pathways. This initiative seeks to promote broader international representation and inclusivity.
Competition Structure
Each bodyweight category will feature a maximum of 11 competitors, ensuring a balanced and competitive field. The allocation of slots across the four pathways reflects the IWF’s commitment to merit-based qualification while also honoring the host nation’s participation and encouraging global diversity.
